Warsaw from a Different Angle
You don't need to travel far to feel like you've escaped the city. Zegrze Reservoir sits just 30 minutes north of Warsaw — but once you're out on the water, the capital feels like a distant dream.
On this particular July evening, the conditions were perfect: glassy water, a warm breeze, and crystal-clear air that let us spot the Warsaw skyline shimmering on the horizon — a full 28 kilometres away in a straight line.
There's something quietly spectacular about seeing a city's skyscrapers from the middle of a lake. The familiar towers of Wola and the city centre became tiny silver needles on the horizon, a reminder that you're never truly far from Warsaw — yet somehow, completely elsewhere.
An Evening on the Reservoir
The Zegrze Reservoir is one of the largest artificial lakes in Masovia, formed at the confluence of the Narew and Bug rivers. It's a favourite escape for locals in the know: sailors, kayakers, and anyone who wants a slice of open water without a long drive.
We set out in the late afternoon and spent two hours exploring the calm, open stretches of the reservoir.
As the sun dropped toward the western shore, the sky erupted in shades of amber, coral, and deep rose — one of those July sunsets that makes you reach for your camera and then just put it down and watch. The light scattered across the water in long golden ribbons, and the silhouette of Warsaw's skyline stood out against the glowing horizon.
